Senior Credit Manager


First Capital Bank is a leading regional financial institution operating across Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. As the Bank continues to strengthen its wholesale credit capability, governance, and risk oversight, we are seeking a highly experienced and analytical credit professional to join our Credit team in a key leadership role.
 
As Senior Credit Manager, you will support the delivery of effective wholesale credit risk management by contributing to the structuring, appraisal, and sanctioning of credit transactions. Reporting to the Head of Credit, you will provide credit intelligence, risk oversight, and policy input while ensuring quality, timeliness, and regulatory compliance across the credit portfolio. This role plays a critical part in safeguarding asset quality and supporting sustainable business growth.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Structure, appraise, and evaluate wholesale credit proposals with a strong focus on quality, accuracy, and turnaround time.
  • Collaborate with Relationship Executives on client engagements requiring specialist credit input and risk assessment.
  • Design, set, and monitor credit covenants, risk triggers, and early warning indicators.
  • Provide ongoing credit risk oversight, including portfolio monitoring, arrears management, and emerging risk identification.
  • Formulate and support credit recoveries and distressed asset remediation strategies.
  • Oversee disbursement of approved credit facilities in line with sanction terms, policies, and internal controls.
  • Establish and maintain effective controls within credit operations and processes.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and escalate material credit concerns with clear remedial recommendations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, standardisation, and periodic review of credit policies, procedures, and documentation in line with regulatory and Group requirements.
 
Key Skills & Competencies
  • Strong leadership capability with experience managing and guiding credit teams.
  • In-depth understanding of wholesale credit policies, frameworks, and governance.
  • Solid expertise in distressed asset management and recoveries.
  • Detailed working knowledge of IFRS 9 impairment methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of the Banking and Financial Services Act and related regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent analytical, risk assessment, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and collaboration abilities.
 
Requirements & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline (essential).
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in credit origination, appraisal, and approval within a commercial or wholesale lending environment.
  • Proven experience in credit risk management, portfolio oversight, and recoveries.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within a credit or risk function
